Born in Sudan, Sefedine lost his parents to the civil war at age 14 and found refuge in a Doctors Without Borders camp. There, he began creating colorful chalk drawings of African landscapes that eventually reached the desk of Jean-Louis Dumas, then-chief executive of Hermès, who had previously visited the school. Hermès went on to collaborate with Sefedine on six unique scarf designs.
