Hermes Vintage Annual Cadenas 1992 Pelican

There’s an artist behind every Cadenas
So, Who Designed the Pelican?

Just as there’s an artist behind every Hermes scarf, there’s an artist behind every Annual Cadenas. In this specific instance, the artist of the Pelican Cadenas designed many scarves for Hermes and even featured the Pelican on a scarf. Can you guess which scarf it is?

Overview of Hermes Annual Cadenas Charms

First let’s talk about the history of the Annual Cadenas Charms. I mention this in all my Cadenas blogs, so if you’ve seen it before, scroll past for more details on the Pelican.

Every year Hermes creates a theme of the year for the brand and the Annual Cadenas Charms were released to commemorate it. However, this was only done between 1988-2010, which is why they are so coveted. Here is a chart showing each Annual Cadenas Charm with the years of release.

How Did I Choose The Pelican?

I purchased my Pelican Annual Cadenas charm at the end of 2021 from The RealReal. At this time, prices were extremely reasonable and I found this one for $245, plus there was a promotion at the time and I ended up buying it for about $200.

Just in the last 2 years or so, the prices for most annual Cadenas has skyrocketed and currently (Spring 2024), I find it difficult to find the Pelican under $350-500 depending on condition.

Who Designed the 1992 Pelican Annual Cadenas?

The Pelican was designed by Dimitri Rybaltchenko. He’s designed about 40 Hermes scarves that I am familiar with and the scarf that features the Pelican Cadenas is “Sur Mon Nuage” in the 90cm format (seen above and below) and was released as part of the Fall/Winter 2022 collection.

If you are familiar with Hermes artists, the last name, Rybaltchenko, may sound familiar. Vladimir Rybaltchenko, father to Dimitri, also designed about 20 Hermes scarves that I’m familiar with.

Below is a screenshot from Dimitri Rybaltchenko’s Instagram, where he shares the details about the Pelican Cadenas.

How Do You Wear The Hermes Annual Cadenas?

I like to wear my animal Annual Cadenas on my Hermes Picotin 18 in Noir Clemence Leather and my 1991 Lantern on my Hermes Picotin Pocket (Cargo). I also like to use them as scarf rings. The Pelican looks particularly cute as a scarf ring because it sits on your shoulder.
