Which Hermes Scarf Is Carrie Bradshaw Wearing in SATC? (The Birkin Episode)

Samantha helped put the Birkin on the Map
Let’s do the same for Carrie’s scarf

When it comes to iconic style, “you can't help but” think of Carrie Bradshaw from "Sex and the City." Played by Sarah Jessica Parker, she's the epitome of fashion-forward. Carrie's style? Well, it's like this perfect mix of high-end glamour and downtown cool. She can pull off everything from designer labels to thrift store finds with this effortless charm that just draws you in. And her accessories! Perfection. Whether it's her statement necklaces or her unforgettable shoes, Carrie's look is a lesson in wearing what feel right to you.

And in the Episode “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda” she accompanies Samantha to the Hermes store to secure a Birkin for her client, Lucy Lou. In true Hermes spirt, she dresses the part with a few Hermes accessories. But which ones are they?

Let’s find out which scarf Carrie Bradshaw is wearing in “Sex and The City”?

Photos from youtube.com

Above are the screenshots I had for reference

The above screenshots are the two photos I used for my reference points. Here are the most important things I noticed first:

  1. The Hermes Lettering
It’s a scarf with prominent “HERMES” block lettering across the center.
    2. The Southwest Detail
On the side I can see details that look Southwest inspired. There aren’t many Hermes scarves within that category.
    3. The Leaf Detail
Above the block lettering I can see some watercolor looking leaves. This scarf isn’t designed with flat color blocks, but rather it has lots of color variation.

    4. The Edge Detail
The border also has the same watercolor effect, so I can rule out any scarves with a solid edge border.
    5. Size
When Hermes scarves are tied around the head, usually it’s a 90cm that’s being used. But here there is quite a small bow in the back, so this leads me to believe we are looking for all the above details in an Hermes 45cm scarf.
    5. Scarf Ring
Not pictured above (but included later) Carrie is wearing a scarf ring on her headscarf. I will identify that too.

Here are a couple scarves I considered

Hermes Scarf Options

When I saw the Southwest detail along the border, of course the first artist that came to mind was Kermit Oliver. I took a closer look at the details of “Pani la Shar Pawnee”, which was first issued in 1984, as well as “Kachinas”, which was first issued in 1992. Neither of these were right. I also looked at the Hermes scarves released in 2000 and 2001, but ultimately decided Carrie was too much of a vintage lover to buy one from the current season. With enough patience and searching, I finally found it.

Carrie Bradshaw is wearing the Hermes “Gaucho” scarf by Caty Latham (1978)

Caty Latham’s first scarf was released with Hermes in 1965, entitled “Les Cles” and is one of Hermes’ top selling patterns. In total she has designed over 50 scarves with Hermes. Her designs are signed one of two ways, “.Caty.” or in later years “Latham”.

And here are the scarf details

1. The block letters on the Hermes “Gaucho” scarf

2. The Southwest pattern on the Hermes “Gaucho” scarf

3. The leaf detail with watercolor effect on the Hermes “Gaucho” scarf

4. The uneven border with sketch mark effect on the Hermes “Gaucho” scarf

5. The Hermes H Cadena scarf ring. Every year Hermes creates a theme of the year for the brand and the Annual Cadenas Charms were released to commemorate it. However, this was only done between 1988-2010. The charm (or Cadenas in this case) matches the Cadenas released in the year 2000, which leads me to believe this is a 2000 edition of the Hermes Kelly Lock Scarf Ring. View the chart below of all Hermes Annual Cadenas.

6. Here is the final reveal of the “Gaucho” scarf that Carrie Bradshaw is wearing in “Sex and The City”.

It was only released in a size 45cm, but in multiple colorways such as the ones below
