Hermes Vintage Annual Cadenas 1991 Lantern

Is The Lantern The Most Underrated Hermes Annual Cadenas?
I Think It Might Be

Whenever I mention the Hermes Annual Cadenas Charms on Instagram and TikTok, it’s always the animal charms that get the most attention, and for good reason. They are so cute and I do truly consider the animals to be the top tier of Annual Cadenas Charms. But there are a few elements in the 1992 Lantern that push it way to the top of the list.

Overview of Hermes Annual Cadenas Charms

First let’s talk about the history of the Annual Cadenas Charms. I mention this in all my Cadenas blogs, so if you’ve seen it before, scroll past for more details on the Lantern.

Every year Hermes creates a theme of the year for the brand and the Annual Cadenas Charms were released to commemorate it. However, this was only done between 1988-2010, which is why they are so coveted. Here is a chart showing each Annual Cadenas Charm with the years of release.

Details on the 1991 Lantern

The beautiful Hermes Annual Cadenas Charm was released to commemorate the theme of the year in 1991, which was “Asia”. There were a few different Asian themed scarves that were released as part of the collection too.

Les Beaux Jours de Bonsai by Catherine Baschet
Nikko by Vladimir Rybaltchenko

The reason I wanted to add this charm to my collection is because I purchased an Hermes Picotin Pocket (or Cargo) and thought it would be the perfect match. I usually keep 4 or 5 Hermes Annual Cadenas charms on my Picotin 18 in Noir Clemence leather, but I thought multiple charms would be overpowering on the Picotin Pocket. Thus was looking for something minimal, but still eye catching.

So here is why I chose the Lantern

  1. Two Tone:
It’s the only Annual Cadenas Charm that is Two Tone with gold and silver. Because my Picotin Pocket (Cargo) has Palladium hardware, it was the perfect option to bring in some yellow gold as well.

  2. Minimal:
Since the Hermes Picotin Pocket (Cargo) has its own incredible detail, I was looking for something that still looked special, but matched the geometric straight lines of the Picotin Pocket (Cargo).

  3. Collectible:
As the market value of the Annual Cadenas Charms has increased in recent years, I could see the value of the Lantern increasing quickly. This used to be one that would be listed in the $200-$400 range, but I watched it spike to the $1,000 range quite quickly and wanted to snag it when I found it for a good price.

How Did You Find an Hermes Annual Cadenas Cham For a Good Price?

For this particular Hermes Annual Cadenas Charm, I was searching on eBay. This is where I find most of the charms these day, but I decided to check eBay France. Usually if an item is only listed in another country’s eBay, it’s because they do not ship internationally. This one was listed for the equivalent of about $500 USD. They also had a business seller’s profile with the telephone and email for their shop. I decided to email them with an offer of $300 USD (through PayPal) including shipping and they accepted. This was the last Lantern Cadenas I saw for under $1,000 in the last 6 months (as of April 2024).
