From The H ermès Spring-Summer 1987 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: The ancient "stupa*, a funeral monument which became a Buddhist symbol, was a simple mound of stones. Later, it was adorned with porticoes (torana). The design of this scarf is broadly drawn from the great "stupa* of Sanci (Maurya dynasty. 324 B.C. 187 A.D.). The carvings and bas-reliefs depict elephants, horses, lions, peacocks, lotus flowers and, in the center, the wheel of the law. In a flight of fancy, the artist introduced the Hindu religion by depicting Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of abundance and joy. The lower part of the scarf shows the famous sculpture chosen, in 1947, as the symbol of the Indian republic. i.e. the four lions of the capital of Ashoka (third century B.C.).
