From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2013 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: "Aloha" is a compound noun: Alo apparently means "nose to nose" the way the Oceanic people kiss by rubbing their noses together. And Ha means "breath of life". When the two terms are joined, they mean "Hello", "Welcome", "See you soon" or " love you" and form the greeting the Hawaiian natives give to their visitors, along with a garland of flowers as a token of welcome. The same ceremony takes place at the moment of departure to cheer up the leaving of Waikiki beach. The garlands are often made from plumeria flowers whose subtle fragrance is said to drive away care! The "Aloha" carre conjures up the luxuriance of these blissful Polynesian island washed by the warm waters of the Ocean. The vegetation here is incredibly exuberant and odoriferous - passion flower, hibiscus, gardenia, tree ferns, coconut and palm trees lulled by the trade winds, royal palms fanning out their leaves like a peacock. In the centre, surrounded by birds in all the colours of the rainbow and Tahitians with crowns of flowers, a magnificent banyan, a holy tree from Asia, spreads its branches and soothing shade. All the curves in the carre and the harmony of its composition call to mind the nonchalance of this land and tha sweetness of its climate.
