From The Hermès Fall-Winter 2001/02 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Traditionally, Chinese carpets were used less to cover the floors than to decorate the walls, to embellish tables and also adorn horses. For ages, also, carpets in China have served as breviaries, disseminating useful teaching. And then, around the thirteenth century, an angered emperor used a carpet to smother a felon, who thus paid for his crime with no blood-letting nor audible protest. This, too, could constitute an art of the steppes.
