From The Hermès Spring-Summer 1998 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: In the 16th century, long before the beginning of what a poet has called "the era of the finished world", the maritime expansion of the Portuguese overtook what up to now had been achieved by the Chinese. Western Man, intoxicated by the spaces he conquered along with his fear, pushed back the limits of the universe with his sails. It was on board these legendary great ships that, in their buoyant assault on the unknown, the Magellans and the Vasco da Gamas fathomed all the riches of the lands beyond.
Size Guide
- Twilly: small but mighty, use it like a typical scarf, as a bag handle, as a belt, and more.
- 45cm: this is the typical pocket square size, will fit around the neck like a bandana.
- 55cm: this is the bandana size typically printed in 3 colors to look like a traditional bandana.
- 70cm: this is a great option for petites and they are typically made out of a lighter weight silk than any of the other formats.
- 90cm: this is the classic Hermès scarf size. It's very versatile and if you're looking at any vintage photos, this is the scarf size that's worn.
- 140cm: the largest size of the bunch, almost reaching 5 ft. It's hard to capture the scale in photos but these are incredible as a lightweight shawl in the summer, or folded for a warmer feel in the winter.
- Shawls & Other Sizes: there are a few styles that Hermès does not make every season which are just as lovely and fit into this category.
