From The Hermès Spring-Summer Fall-Winer 1992/93 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: The tiles that embellished the facades of Arabic mosques reached Spain in the 14th century, then Portugal, and soon were used extensively to ornament houses, churches and palaces. Generic scenes soon predominated, notably views of ports, in tones influenced by Chinese porcelain and Delft faience. Our 20th century imagination voluntarily embarks on voyages within these seascapes, where the sails are filled with the genious of the ceramists.

From The Hermès Spring-Summer 1999 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Spreading through Spain and Portugal, which had admired it on the walls of mosques, from the fourteenth century onward this enameled pottery tile (azulejo) became the standard decorative ornament of the palaces, churches and rich houses in those two countries. It was in the seventeenth century that the fashion spread for blue, inspired by Delft. It was mostly used for large panels with allegorical, religious or historical themes or, as here, for harbour scenes.
