From The Hermès Website: Developed in the 14th century, the Bingata is a dyeing process originating from the Okinawa archipelago, when it was the Ryukyu Kingdom, at the crossroads of trade routes between Southeast Asia, China and the Japanese Empire. Different techniques are combined to create the Bingata. First, a stencil is applied to the fabric, then this is coated with a rice paste in order to reproduce the patterns on the material. The areas to be painted are soaked in a soy-based mix to help fix the color pigments. The result is incredibly delicate, as this scarf designed by Natsuno Hidaka exemplifies, taking inspiration from this expertise.
Size Guide
- Twilly: small but mighty, use it like a typical scarf, as a bag handle, as a belt, and more.
- 45cm: this is the typical pocket square size, will fit around the neck like a bandana.
- 55cm: this is the bandana size typically printed in 3 colors to look like a traditional bandana.
- 70cm: this is a great option for petites and they are typically made out of a lighter weight silk than any of the other formats.
- 90cm: this is the classic Hermès scarf size. It's very versatile and if you're looking at any vintage photos, this is the scarf size that's worn.
- 140cm: the largest size of the bunch, almost reaching 5 ft. It's hard to capture the scale in photos but these are incredible as a lightweight shawl in the summer, or folded for a warmer feel in the winter.
- Shawls & Other Sizes: there are a few styles that Hermès does not make every season which are just as lovely and fit into this category.
