From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2009 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Over the centuries, the indian in Brazil has mingled his feathers with his past, with his rituals and with his festivals: sumptuous headdresses and finery, jewellery ornaments and musical instruments - sheer bursts of colour! The art of the feather has evolved in a green and sombre environment where the plume of the birds surpasses that of the flowers. More than one thousand different species, some of which are unique in the world, offer an incredible array of colours and shapes. Furthermore, of the 350,000 Indians living in Brazil, 60% reside in the tropical forest where isolated tribes still live today, completely cut off from the rest of the world.

From The Hermès Spring-Summer 1991 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: A great mystery of creation is the orgy of beauty that nature parades before the eyes of man, as if to make him jealous or ashamed. But when the man is an Indian in Brazil, he has more than one trick in his bag. With a quick gesture, he confiscates a few feathers from a bird to make his own finery or to decorate the objects he uses in his daily life. After that. we might wonder who should be jealous of whom.

From The Hermès Fall-Winter 1988/89 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Primitive man dreamed of flying and since he could not, he adorned himself with beautiful birds' feathers hoping to rise above his terrestrial fate. Today, the sons of Icarus fly in airplanes to surmount their pedestrian condition, but the fascination of feathers remains. In Brazil, they are everywhere: in fashion, head-dress, musical instruments, in celebration of rituals and tumult of festivities.
