From The Hermès Spring-Summer 1994 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Once upon a time, the world's great powers rivaled each other in ostentatious decoration of their warships. During the 18th century, the afterdecks of ships were still being ornamented with gilded moldings and peopled with carved sirens, caryatids and other symbols of victory. These figures were distinctly feminine, a reminder to the sailor of sweet pleasures left behind, making him impatient for the voluptuousness that might await him back in port.
Size Guide
- Twilly: small but mighty, use it like a typical scarf, as a bag handle, as a belt, and more.
- 45cm: this is the typical pocket square size, will fit around the neck like a bandana.
- 55cm: this is the bandana size typically printed in 3 colors to look like a traditional bandana.
- 70cm: this is a great option for petites and they are typically made out of a lighter weight silk than any of the other formats.
- 90cm: this is the classic Hermès scarf size. It's very versatile and if you're looking at any vintage photos, this is the scarf size that's worn.
- 140cm: the largest size of the bunch, almost reaching 5 ft. It's hard to capture the scale in photos but these are incredible as a lightweight shawl in the summer, or folded for a warmer feel in the winter.
- Shawls & Other Sizes: there are a few styles that Hermès does not make every season which are just as lovely and fit into this category.
