Why I Love This Pattern: Among the incredible pieces in Émile Hermès collection are three volumes dedicated to the First Nations of North America: McKenney and Hall’s History of the Indian Tribes of North America.
In the winter of 1821, Thomas McKenney, then Washington’s Superintendent of Indian Affairs, welcomed a major delegation of First Nation leaders to the capital. During their visit, they met with President James Monroe, and artist Charles Bird King invited each to sit for a portrait. Wearing ceremonial attire or their own interpretations of Western dress and adorned with feathered headdresses and vivid turbans. They formed a powerful visual record of cultural identity. These portraits later inspired the lithographs published in McKenney and Hall’s celebrated volumes. Years later, Texas painter Kermit Oliver, known for his deep interest in Native American history and symbolism, created his own homage to these images. His design brings together figures such as the Pawnee chief Shar-I-Tar-Ish, Chief Aseola of the Seminole, and the Sioux chief Wa-Na-Ta, arranged in a circle around a central turtle motif. The turtle represents the protective spirit of Mother Earth and the enduring virtues of wisdom and perseverance.
