From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2012 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Frigates are war ships that were invented in the 16th century as very light, quick and easy to handle. The beauty of these vessels and of their plans permeates this scarf whose composition obeys no laws except the constraint of harmony. This pure creation is named Cheval de mer, in homage to the house's equestrian tradition. Here too is that most charming of equestrian fish, the seahorse: its crowned head becoming the figurehead, symbolising the ship and protecting the crew. "Three-masts squared-rigged and a bowsprit at the fore with two or three jibs and a mizzen sail..." The vocabulary of the sea, today and yesterday, recounts a story of travel and adventure in itself.

- Twilly: small but mighty, use it like a typical scarf, as a bag handle, as a belt, and more.
- 45cm: this is the typical pocket square size, will fit around the neck like a bandana.
- 55cm: this is the bandana size typically printed in 3 colors to look like a traditional bandana.
- 70cm: this is a great option for petites and they are typically made out of a lighter weight silk than any of the other formats.
- 90cm: this is the classic Hermès scarf size. It's very versatile and if you're looking at any vintage photos, this is the scarf size that's worn.
- 140cm: the largest size of the bunch, almost reaching 5 ft. It's hard to capture the scale in photos but these are incredible as a lightweight shawl in the summer, or folded for a warmer feel in the winter.
