From The Hermès Fall-Winter 2000/01 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Lacework "àl'aiguille", or with the needle, depends purely and simply on the unaided hand, whereas lace "aux fuseaux", or with bobbins, require the use of a little loom, by means of which the thread winds about a bobbin. In both cases, what patience is need-ed! What skill is required to create these patterns which are both so light and yet so complex. One marvels at the playful intelligence, the sheer finesse and beauty, to which these works bear witness. Really one needs a lacemaker to write books of philosophy.

From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2011 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: If it's true that fairies perform miracles, then lace-makers, by the same token, perform marvels. Lace originates from an interweaving of threads which emphasises emptiness, the immaterial. It is light, airy and ever so complicated. It appeared in the 16th century: needlework lacemaking was realized in the Venice region, work with bobbins around Anvers. The two techniques require patience, skill and reflection, qualities everyone would like to be proud of. "Fond d'Alençon", "blonde" using silk, Kostroma lace... this carré mingles in one harmonious composition different techniques, periods and nationalities.
