From the Hermès Spring Summer 1981 Seasonal Scarf Booklet:
Inspired by early American folk art of the 17th and 19th centuries, this scarf features a playful cut-out design. Lady and George Washington are naively depicted.

From the Hermès Spring-Summer 1994 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Makino paper cutouts was a fashionable pastime in the United States during the 18th and 19th centuries. In those days, well-bred young ladies did not yet know the bitter pleasures of earning a living, and such activities that demanded dexterity kept their hands busy in those periods between sewing bees and singing lessons. The works they created then are now preserved in most of the American arts and crafts museums throughout the country.
