Notes: Not only is this scarf gorgeous with its vibrant washes of colors, but what makes it truly special is the story of its artist, Sefedine Ibrahim Alamin (known as Kwumi). Born in Sudan, Sefedine lost his parents to the civil war at age 14 and found refuge in a Doctors Without Borders camp. There, he began creating colorful chalk drawings of African landscapes that eventually reached the desk of Jean-Louis Dumas, then-chief executive of Hermès, who had previously visited the school. Hermès went on to collaborate with Sefedine on six unique scarf designs. Dumas shared a powerful observation, saying, "This boy was born during the war and saw nothing but death around him, but all of his designs are very peaceful." And I’ll add, not only are they peaceful, they are spectacular. I've also talked about this era, showing the Le Monde issue where this is discussed in my Substack.

From The Hermès Fall-Winter 2000/01 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Once, there were two gods watching over us. The first - the god of Lehreh - inhabited the skies of western Sudan, from where he sent down in timely fashion those life-giving rainstorms which gain such respect. The second, called Bail, in the same part of the heavens, scattered gold with both hands to sow the thick velvet of the night with stars. Each strove against each, for the happiness of all. It happened long ago, far back in the lands, where our races began; we return there in our dreams incessantly, towed by the stars.
