From The Hermès Spring-Summer 1989 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Floral magic. Giverny comes to mind, that village in the Eure where Claude Monet painted what is at once the quintessential flower and the foundation of abstract art: Nymphéas. The soul of the master still inhabits this mysterious garden. Its Japanese bridge spans a whole chapter in the history of art, its wisteria opens up the palette of impressionism. This scarf? A reflection of our modern-day admiration for the man so fascinated by ... reflections.

From The Hermès Fall-Winter 1991/92 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Giverny is "just" a French village in the Normandy, but also happened to be home to Claude Monet. Here, the artist painted his famous Nymphéas and immortalized a Japanese bridge spanning a lily pond. Today admirers can visit his garden, overrun with flowers and sunlight, where the spirit of Impressionism lingers still. One is tempted to disagree with Oscar Wilde: if ever there were a place where nature rivals art. it is most certainly here.
