From The Hermès Fall-Winter 2018/19 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: At the Cadre Noir national riding school in Saumur - a symbol of French equestrian tradition - horses and riders in ceremonial costume perform in the Grand Manège arena. Voltes, serpentines, spirals, diagonals: the figures executed by these high-level dressage riders and their mounts inspired the scrolls of Henri d'Origny's Grand Manège. In this detail from the original design, the imagination concentrates on the equestrian finery. Fabric rosettes, cockades, bits and stirrups, leather and buckles mark out on the silk the curves and lines traced by the horses during these demonstrations of virtuosity.
From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2024 Collection Website Description: From the volte to the serpentine, spiral and diagonal, the equestrian figures performed at the prestigious French Cadre Noir school in Saumur, which horses and riders practice for hours on end, have inspired the curves and volutes of the Grand Manege scarf. Not just the knotted fabric and cockades on the ears, but also the reins, leather bridle posts and stirrups seem to create the marks left on the sand by the arabesques. A single detail of this masterful composition becomes a new scarf.
Size Guide
- Twilly: small but mighty, use it like a typical scarf, as a bag handle, as a belt, and more.
- 45cm: this is the typical pocket square size, will fit around the neck like a bandana.
- 55cm: this is the bandana size typically printed in 3 colors to look like a traditional bandana.
- 70cm: this is a great option for petites and they are typically made out of a lighter weight silk than any of the other formats.
- 90cm: this is the classic Hermès scarf size. It's very versatile and if you're looking at any vintage photos, this is the scarf size that's worn.
- 140cm: the largest size of the bunch, almost reaching 5 ft. It's hard to capture the scale in photos but these are incredible as a lightweight shawl in the summer, or folded for a warmer feel in the winter.
- Shawls & Other Sizes: there are a few styles that Hermès does not make every season which are just as lovely and fit into this category.
