From The Hermès Spring-Summer 1989 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: The Paris Opera is a technical and artistic feat if ever there was one. Instigated by Napoleon Ill and the Empress Eugénie, born after 13 years of work and thirty thousand sketches, built atop a sheet of water that had been dried up and filled with concrete, it finally opened its doors on January 5, 1875. And if this haven for opera-lovers has been haunted ever since, it is less by the phantom of Gaston Leroux's novel than by the genius of its curl-haired architect, Charles Garnier.
From The Hermès Fall-Winter 1991/92 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: The apotheosis of the Napoléon III style through its neo-baroque ornamentation, the Paris Opéra today is more alive and flourishing than ever. At the time, its architect had designed it to be the largest theatre in the world. It remains a monument to the operatic art, and its grand staircase still leads us up to the "Seventh Heaven", where the human voice is raised to miraculous heights. A setting truly worthy of such transcendent emotions!
Size Guide
- Twilly: small but mighty, use it like a typical scarf, as a bag handle, as a belt, and more.
- 45cm: this is the typical pocket square size, will fit around the neck like a bandana.
- 55cm: this is the bandana size typically printed in 3 colors to look like a traditional bandana.
- 70cm: this is a great option for petites and they are typically made out of a lighter weight silk than any of the other formats.
- 90cm: this is the classic Hermès scarf size. It's very versatile and if you're looking at any vintage photos, this is the scarf size that's worn.
- 140cm: the largest size of the bunch, almost reaching 5 ft. It's hard to capture the scale in photos but these are incredible as a lightweight shawl in the summer, or folded for a warmer feel in the winter.
- Shawls & Other Sizes: there are a few styles that Hermès does not make every season which are just as lovely and fit into this category.
