Why I Love This Pattern: The Consular Guard was a French military unit formed to protect the leaders of the Consulate, the executive government that ruled France in the final years of the First Republic. Established by First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte in 1799 following the Coup of 18 Brumaire, it was later renamed the Imperial Guard in 1804 when Bonaparte became Emperor of the French.
