From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2011 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Benoit is a baker, Matin is a miller, Hermès... a saddler. The twenty-four letters of the alphabet give us tewnty-four craftsmen and twenty-four trades... All have evolved over the course of years, but vine-pickers, painters, jewel-lers and saddlers still look to their hands and their know-how as their trusted allies. Charming and naïve, like the prizes given out at school to good little children, these illustrations are inspired by the pictures of Epinal. Originating in France, in the town of the same name, the pictures used to tell stories, teach and entertain, their reputation in the 19th century becoming worldwide. Storyteller and traveller, the Hermes carré is certainly no stranger to this association.
