From the Hermès Fall-Winter 2011/12 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Like a metaphor, this fabric tree speaks to us of the bond - that unites mankind to the vegetal world, that essential ingredient of textiles. In the tropics, bark is beaten until it becomes soft and supple, in Western Africa hibiscus, in India jute, or in Asia certain types of nettles... Flowers, leaves and fruit all lavish their colours. A portrait of the world, genealogy of techniques and resources, these are a bit of what these lines contain. Each leaf is decorated with geometric patterns symbolising a culture, belief, or social status...and whose complexity at times conjures up a sort of magic protecting from harm or summoning luck.
Size Guide
- Twilly: small but mighty, use it like a typical scarf, as a bag handle, as a belt, and more.
- 45cm: this is the typical pocket square size, will fit around the neck like a bandana.
- 55cm: this is the bandana size typically printed in 3 colors to look like a traditional bandana.
- 70cm: this is a great option for petites and they are typically made out of a lighter weight silk than any of the other formats.
- 90cm: this is the classic Hermès scarf size. It's very versatile and if you're looking at any vintage photos, this is the scarf size that's worn.
- 140cm: the largest size of the bunch, almost reaching 5 ft. It's hard to capture the scale in photos but these are incredible as a lightweight shawl in the summer, or folded for a warmer feel in the winter.
- Shawls & Other Sizes: there are a few styles that Hermès does not make every season which are just as lovely and fit into this category.
