Why I Love This Pattern: This scarf is an ode to the 1833 Fête des Vignerons in Vevey, Switzerland, which is a grand festival held only once every twenty-five years. At the center, this image, titled Bacchus Grand Prêtre, comes from a leaflet for the 1833 Winegrowers Festival, illustrated by Théophile Steinlen. It shows Bacchus, the god of wine, carried through the procession and preceded by his High Priest, a theatrical representation of the festival’s spirit. Scenes like this one were part of the grand parade that celebrated the vineyard workers of Vevey with music, costume, and ceremony. More information can be seen here along with the original artwork of which the center motif is based. It is incredibly rare as it dates back to 1952 and was never rereleased.
