Why I Love This Pattern: Aline Honoré brings to life not just the ancient city of Marseille, but also the daring journeys of Pytheas, one of Europe’s earliest explorers. Born in Marseille, around 350 BC, Pytheas ventured beyond the Mediterranean world known to his contemporaries. As a navigator and geographer, Pytheas charted new courses, traveling as far as the Arctic and Iceland, circumnavigating the British Isles, and even exploring the Baltic. While his initial mission may have been driven by trade (seeking amber and pewter for his city) his observations shaped how we understand the natural world. He was the first to connect the phases of the moon with the tides, a discovery that underscores his contributions to exploration and science.
