From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2016 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: The phoenix, the mount of immortals, is a huge and wondrous mythical bird that lives several hundred years, then bursts into flames in a nest of myrrh and incense to be reborn anew. The Greeks named it after the date tree (phoînix in Greek), which they considered a symbol of fertility and longevity. The creature emerges from the centre of the scarf, surrounded by the leaves and fruit of this legendary tree. The illustrator Laurence Bourthoumieux's unique colouring style makes this composition seem straight out of a colouring book. In an allegory of this bird of paradise's journey, colour appears all around the phoenix, whose head is already starting to come to life. Little by little the black and white becomes multicoloured. The phoenix is reborn from its ashes.
