Notes: The original release of The New Orleans scarf in 1996 included a tribute to jazz composer and pianist Lillian (Lil) Hardin, second wife of Louis Armstrong and widely recognized as the first major female jazz instrumentalist. However, her last name was misspelled as “Harding” on the design. This error was corrected in this 2006 limited edition rerelease, which supported the Louisiana Historical Society, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the New Orleans City Park Carousel Restoration Project.

From The Hermès Spring-Summer 1996 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: New Orleans, the cradle of jazz. At the turn of the century the strolling fanfare of brass and wind instruments settled in the bars, joined by the piano, the double bass and the drums, for a jam session to wake the dead. It was the age of the blues, and their vigorous spirit still haunts the famed riverboats, which ply the Mississippi, and whose paddles churn to the legendary names of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Johnny Dodds and many others
