From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2011 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Petrified plant, so vegetable? Mineral? Animal? Coral's composition wasn't discovered until the 18th century. "Angel's skin", "blood flower"... the names of these colours bear witness to the symbolic aspect of this curious animal. Its strangeness gives it pride of place in the curiosity cabinets and its arborescent forms often suggest the weird objects created by expert craftsman hands. A curious little teapot topped with a mischievous monkey inspired this carré. Hanging from this spiral of pearls of coral are jewels and amulets whose shapes evoke so many things one thinks one recognizes without being able to put a name to. Some sort of dreams, dreams of coral....
