From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2012 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: An homage to explorers, nomads and archaeologists, this scarf celebrates Afghan art and art that defies time. Afghanistan inhabits the crossroads of Western and Oriental cultures. Bactres, the capital city, in the province of Bactriana, thus became Balkh in the north of the country. Over 3 000 years ago, this region of great cultural richness was prosperous and highly populated. A large satrapy of the Persian Empire, it was allied to Alexander the Great, and dominated by the Seleucids. Its treasures attest to these diverse influences. This scarf is inspired by this region, continuing these rich exchanges as an equestrian sport: rearing horses are leogryphs, half eagle, half lion, and winged horses become dragons.
Size Guide
- Twilly: small but mighty, use it like a typical scarf, as a bag handle, as a belt, and more.
- 45cm: this is the typical pocket square size, will fit around the neck like a bandana.
- 55cm: this is the bandana size typically printed in 3 colors to look like a traditional bandana.
- 70cm: this is a great option for petites and they are typically made out of a lighter weight silk than any of the other formats.
- 90cm: this is the classic Hermès scarf size. It's very versatile and if you're looking at any vintage photos, this is the scarf size that's worn.
- 140cm: the largest size of the bunch, almost reaching 5 ft. It's hard to capture the scale in photos but these are incredible as a lightweight shawl in the summer, or folded for a warmer feel in the winter.
- Shawls & Other Sizes: there are a few styles that Hermès does not make every season which are just as lovely and fit into this category.
