Whether man-of-war or merchantman, the king of the high seas cuts through the foam-tipped waves. And a lusty sea-shanty fills the air.
From The Hermès Spring-Summer 1995 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: This particular wind filled the sails of the navy in the old days. Stirring memories in the streaming wake of those great ships of the 19th century portrayed by Cornelis de Vries: "Flying Cloud", "Chesapeake", "Thermopylae"... The ring of ships encloses an astrolabe, while the eagles on the figurehead of the American steam-powered frigate "Lancaster" (1881) silently challenge the seabirds for mastery of the waves.
Size Guide
- Twilly: small but mighty, use it like a typical scarf, as a bag handle, as a belt, and more.
- 45cm: this is the typical pocket square size, will fit around the neck like a bandana.
- 55cm: this is the bandana size typically printed in 3 colors to look like a traditional bandana.
- 70cm: this is a great option for petites and they are typically made out of a lighter weight silk than any of the other formats.
- 90cm: this is the classic Hermès scarf size. It's very versatile and if you're looking at any vintage photos, this is the scarf size that's worn.
- 140cm: the largest size of the bunch, almost reaching 5 ft. It's hard to capture the scale in photos but these are incredible as a lightweight shawl in the summer, or folded for a warmer feel in the winter.
- Shawls & Other Sizes: there are a few styles that Hermès does not make every season which are just as lovely and fit into this category.
