From The Hermès Fall-Winter 1994/95 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: In 1750 Voltaire set up residence in Potsdam near Fredrick II in the Château de Sans-Souci whose Versailles-like beauty was the inspiration for the border of this scarf. At first it was a perfect friendship between the King of Prussia and the esteemed Man of Letters, whose signatures adorn the center of this composition. It took only three years for the trouble to begin; this period no doubt marks the limit of time that an enlightened despot's moods can tolerate the spirit of philosophy.
