From The Hermès Spring-Summer 1997 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: « A propos de bottes » is an old French saying meaning "with-out a serious purpose". But do we always have to be serious and must there always be a purpose? To raise our lives to the dignity of art, let us cultivate a light-hearted fancy which leads us to the heart of things. This play-fulness, however, does not rule out meticulous attention to detail, especially when it involves the transcription on to silk of the intricate engraving of a very fine study of boots.

From The Hermès Fall-Winter 2009/10 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: The artist is committed to giving life and movement to this study of riding boots, with all the mastery of his art. Hunting boots, horsemen's boots, top boots, and cavalry boots: they all have a story to tell, a life intimately linked to the horse, written in the folds, the suppleness or the patina of the leather. Here, we can guess the foot, the leg, the pressure exerted by the rider on his mount; there, the shoe-trees keep watch to maintain the strictest elegance. The fly whisks, hunting whips, bamboo sticks, top hats and hunting gear complete this study with an evocation of the world of hunting.
