Why I Love This Pattern: Hugo Grygkar, the designer behind many of Hermès’s most iconic carrés including the beloved Brides de Gala, created Ex-Libris in 1946, here reimagined with a fresh color treatment. Named after the personalized bookplates favored by bibliophiles, the design centers on a drawing by Alfred de Dreux (1810–1860) that Émile-Maurice Hermès chose as his own bookplate in 1923: a duc carriage with horse and groom, placed above his initials EMH. Flanking the image, two caducei—the staff of Hermes, or Mercury in Roman mythology—symbolize peace and commerce. Over time, this motif became an emblem of the house, surrounded in the carré by four elegant, horse-drawn carriages inspired by early 19th-century carriage-makers’ drawings from Émile Hermès’s personal collection.
