Why I Love This Pattern: This is the original issue, released in 1987 and illustrated by Loïc Dubigeon. It is an incredible tribute with a portrait of Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma. We can see his name at the top by the astronaut and his initials at the base of the tree, which differs from all other editions. At just 35, Sharma became the first Indian citizen to travel to space as part of a joint mission between India and the Soviet Union. He spent eight days aboard the Salyut 7 space station, even photographing northern India from orbit to assist with future hydropower planning in the Himalayas. His most famous moment? When asked how India looked from space, he replied with a line that’s since become legendary: “Saare Jahan Se Achcha”, meaning “better than the whole world.”
