From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2011 Seasonal Scarf Booklet:  Flowers, gigantic, fantastic, undulating, A burr settles on an Indian printed cotton. This exuberant blossoming, rich in colours is inspired by the cotton fabrics brought from India at the end of the 16th centurv. The French adored them so much that a law forbidding them was passed in 1686, in order to protect the silk merchants from the Lons region and the cloth manufacturers of the north from such competition. But the infatuation intensified. The exoticism and the charming simplicity of these materials captivated the wealthy just as much as those with more modest means. First appearing in Marseilles, Indian fabrics multiplied very rapidly, requiring artists who specialised in flowers and naturalists to design special patterns for these light materials.
