Why I Love This Pattern: Roland Barthes is a French philosopher and to commemorate what would have been his 100th birthday, Hermès released this motif. It was inspired by his book “A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments”, which was released in 1977. Philippe Apeloig is the artist behind this scarf. He is a notable graphic designer working on projects like creating the logotype and identity for the Yves Saint Laurent museum in Marrakech, He creates typefaces which are published by the type foundry Nouvelle Noire and has worked on other project with Hermès too. Not to mention, around the time of this project, his posters and typography were just featured in a thirty-year retrospective at Paris’s Musée des Art Décoratifs. W Magazine states Apeloig "designed a special text layout for each page of ‘Fragments,’ so my [Apeloig] first idea was to use typography, but that was too obvious. Finally I blacked out all the text, turned the words into graphic blocks, and reproduced each page in its original order like a mosaic.” The result, a graphic overview of “Fragments,” resembles a musical score, a piece of morse code, hieroglyphics and a diagram of digital circuitry. It’s both a thing of beauty and a source of comfort for those waiting for the phone to ring." Here is the full article linked here.
