From the Hermès Scarf Booklet About This Motif: In the Lacydon cove, six centuries before our era, the Phocaeans founded their first colony: Massalia, which would become Marseille. The Greek Pytheas, a contemporary of Alexander the Great and Aristotle, was born there two hundred years later. Eager for discovery, he managed to convince the assembly to finance an extraordinary voyage that took him, in search of amber and tin, far beyond the Mediterranean, to the then-unexplored northern seas. From this journey, which made him one of the first explorers, he brought back a fascinating account, of which only a few excerpts have survived to this day, quoted by authors such as Ptolemy. He described the tides and the influence of the Moon, the calculation of the Earth's axial tilt as well as the latitudes of these distant lands, the customs and traditions of the Celts and Goths, and the dimensions of Great Britain. Mocked by many of his contemporaries, his sayings were gradually, over the centuries, regarded with the interest they deserved: from fantastical they became plausible, and from plausible generally verified. The extraordinary journey of Pytheas, recounted on silk, pays homage to the man and his native city.
