From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2010 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: The word polo comes from Tibet, where the British founded the first club dedicated to this sport in 1859 at Silchar in the Himalayas. Two teams of four players armed with bamboo mallets are matched against each other in bouts lasting 7 minutes. Small, muscular and very wiry, capable of rapidly changing direction, the ponies, usually Argentinian, are the key figures in polo. The carré Les Poneys de polo illustrates these extremely hard fought contests. In the centre, handlers watch over the mounts at rest. The background and the borders of the carré conjure up typically Argentinian belts, with their multicoloured stripes and their geometrical braiding.
