From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2013 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Far back in history, patchwork was born of the need to recycle off-cuts of fabric, transforming them into complex new works of art along the way. Patchwork is the perfect Illustration of a basic, unchanging human need, to make life just a little prettier, a little more ordered. The floral fabrics collected in this composition testify to a proud Provençal tradition, and the region's esthetic history, dating back to the seventeenth century when Marseille was a flourishing port, visited by ships laden with exotic goods from the Indies. Expert textile weavers and printers, the Provençaux began to copy the block-printed cottons from India. The success of their exuberant designs - decorated with plant motifs, flowers and birds - has continued ever since. This carré presents an array of textiles from every period, celebrating the richly decorative traditional costumes of Provence, and the extraordinary artisan skills of the Hermès engravers and silk printers - based in France's silk capital, Lyon - who have succeeded in capturing here not only the finesse of the motifs but the relief effect of the stitching.
