From The Hermès Spring-Summer 2018 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: Elaine Lustig Cohen was an artist, graphic designer and founder of the New York bookshop Ex Libris. She began her career in New York at the beginning of the 1950s, working in various fields including publishing and architecture and collaborating with the likes of Eero Saarinen, Richard Meier and Philip Johnson. The latter chose to involve her in a number of his architectural projects: the lettering and signage for the Seagram Building, The Glass House and the Lincoln Center. As an artist, in the 1960s and 70s she developed a hard-edged style using bold colours and abstract shapes that asserted the canvas's flat surface. The painting that lends itself to this scarf is a fine example.
