t was in 1490 that Hanus, the master clockmaker, delivered his great astronomica clock to the town hall of Prague where it is still in use today. Legend has it that the town councillors of that time were then so pleased with the work that they took every measure to ensure that the unhappy workman would be unable to satisfy other customers in the future. As the solar hours creep by, whether traditional or Babylonian, jealousy lives on!

From The Hermès Fall-Winter 2012/13 Seasonal Scarf Booklet: In Prague, the City Hall's tower is decorated with an incom. | parable astronomical clock completed in 1490, by the master clockmaker Hanus. Based on geocentrism, the sun rotates around the earth! The clock, within a few circles, moves from one time, to another. That of Bohemia, in Gothic script, begins at sunset. Then, in Roman numerals, appears time as it is now commonly accepted. But inside this disc, twelve circular arcs numbered in Arabic script indicate Babylonian daytime hours--the duration of which vary according to the seasons. A small crown, finally, orbits inside the dial. Punctuated by the signs of the zodiac, it determines the position of the sun and the moon... the day and the night.
